Counterbalance novice training at our Birmingham centre
Novice forklift training in Birmingham is the standard first step if you have never held an accredited lift-truck certificate. Most candidates start on a counterbalance forklift — the truck used on loading docks, yards and wider warehouse aisles — then add reach truck, PPT/LLOP, Bendi or VNA later through a conversion course.
You do not need a UK car driving licence to operate a forklift on private premises. Employers look for ITSSAR (or equivalent) basic training, site induction and written authorisation to operate. Read our guide on whether you need a driving licence for a forklift.
Who this novice course is for
- People with no forklift experience who need a first FLT certificate
- Agency and warehouse candidates applying for counterbalance roles in Birmingham and the West Midlands
- Companies sending new starters who have never been formally trained
- Career changers who will work on private land, not the public highway
If you already drive a truck at work but have never been assessed, the semi-experienced forklift training pathway is usually shorter than a full novice week.
Counterbalance, reach truck and PPT / LLOP
Counterbalance is the default novice truck at our Birmingham centre. You learn stability, daily checks, hydraulic controls, pallet handling, ramps and stacking under the operators’ safety code.
Reach truck training is available for novices who will work in racking rather than yards. We also convert existing counterbalance operators onto reach — that is a conversion, not a second full novice course.
PPT / LLOP (powered pallet trucks and low-level order pickers) is a common first warehouse skill. Several of our Google reviews mention PPT training with instructor Qasim. Tell us the machine on your site so we match the assessment.
How the 3–5 days are structured
Novice duration for three people is about 32.5 hours at a 3:1:1 ratio. A typical Birmingham week covers:
- Theory — HSE ACOP L117, stability triangle, pre-use inspection, pedestrian segregation
- Familiarisation — controls, starting, stopping, steering and hydraulic operation
- Load handling — laden and unladen pallets, stacking and de-stacking
- Yard skills — ramps, inclines, confined turning and battery care
- Assessment — written paper plus observed practical test
Successful delegates receive accredited documentation for employers. Your workplace must still complete familiarisation on their exact trucks, racking and traffic routes before unsupervised work.
Birmingham centre or on-site
Training runs at Unit 8, Paper Mill Road, Birmingham, B44 8NH, with parking and refreshments, or on-site nationwide on your own machines. Centre courses suit individuals and small groups. On-site suits employers who want operators assessed on the trucks they will actually use. Compare options in on-site vs off-site forklift training.
Weekend dates are available at standard rates. After you pass, plan a forklift refresher course every three to five years — certificates do not have a DVLA-style expiry, but employers still need current competence. See how long a forklift licence lasts in the UK.
What happens after your first certificate
Stack skills once you have workplace hours: convert to reach, then Bendi or VNA if your warehouse uses narrow aisles. Warehouse supervisors often add IOSH Managing Safely.

A typical novice week at Paper Mill Road
Arrive in safety boots. The first session is theory: why loads become unstable, how daily checks catch faults before they become incidents, and how pedestrians share the same building. Then you move to the truck. Instructors correct steering, inching, and mast control before you stack at height. Classes stay small so you are not watching from the back of a crowd of ten.
If you already have a job offer, tell us the truck on that site — counterbalance, reach or PPT — so assessment matches the work. If you are still job-hunting, counterbalance is the most transferable first ticket in Birmingham warehouses.
Bring photo ID. You do not need a car licence for private-premises training. You do need to pass both the written and practical elements; there is no certificate for attendance alone.
After the course, ask your employer for written authorisation and a familiarisation sign-off on their trucks. That pairing is what HSE expects, not a card in isolation.
Novice training is available as a weekday block and, where demand allows, around weekend working. We keep the 3:1:1 ratio even when dates are tight — adding a fourth person to “make it cheaper” is how people fail the practical. If you have four staff, we will schedule two groups or a follow-on day.
Questions we ask on the phone: have you driven before, which truck does the employer use, and can you attend Birmingham or do we need to come to you? Answer those three and we can book the right course the same conversation. Call 0121 213 1174.
Individuals paying for their own ticket should still ask which truck local agencies want. In Birmingham that is usually counterbalance first, then reach. PPT-only roles exist but they pay less; mention PPT if that is the advertised job so we assess the right machine rather than a counterbalance you will not use.
