1-day forklift refresher course in Birmingham

Counterbalance, reach, Flexi and PPT refreshers
A 1-day forklift refresher course in Birmingham is for certified operators who need to show current competence on counterbalance, reach truck, Flexi/Bendi or LLOP/PPT. It is not a first licence. If you have never been trained, start with novice forklift training.
UK forklift certificates do not expire like a car licence. Employers, insurers and customer auditors still expect a refresher every three to five years, or earlier after a near miss or a change of truck. That is the HSE ACOP L117 approach we follow. Full context is in how long a forklift licence lasts and HSE forklift guidelines 2026.
Who should book a 1-day FLT refresher
- Operators whose last assessment was three or more years ago
- Candidates starting a new warehouse job who are asked for a “valid licence”
- Fleets scheduling a rolling competence programme
- Operators returning after a long absence from the truck
- Sites that need records after an incident or insurance review
You must have documented previous formal training on the category you want to refresh. Converting from counterbalance onto reach or Bendi is a conversion course, not a refresher.
What the 6.5 hours cover
The day is built for a maximum of three delegates so the instructor can correct habits that develop in day-to-day use.
- Theory revision — operators’ safety code, stability, pedestrian awareness
- Pre-use inspection and defect reporting
- Practical assessment on the relevant truck type
- Written test and operator evaluation
- Updated records for employer authorisation to operate
Successful delegates retain certification to operate (for example counterbalance up to 5000 kg with authorisation) anywhere in the UK, subject to site familiarisation on the employer’s machines.
Counterbalance, reach, Flexi and PPT
Say which trucks you use when you book:
- Counterbalance — docks, yards and open warehouse floors
- Reach truck — racking and higher lift work
- Flexi / Bendi — articulated narrow-aisle trucks
- LLOP / PPT — pallet trucks and low-level order pickers
Mixing categories in one day only works where you already hold those certificates. We will not “refresh” a truck type you have never been trained on.
Birmingham weekends and on-site fleets
Sessions run at Unit 8, Paper Mill Road, Birmingham, including Saturday and Sunday at standard rates, or on-site across the UK. On-site refreshers suit larger teams who cannot spare operators for a centre day and who want assessment on their own aisle widths and attachments. See on-site vs off-site training.
Warehouse supervisors who also allocate trucks should consider pairing a refresher with IOSH Managing Safely.
The refresher course is £125. Contact Forklift Pioneer Training on 0121 213 1174 and we will confirm whether a refresher, conversion or semi-experienced pathway is the right fit.
What to bring and what we check
Bring evidence of previous formal training and a list of truck types you still use. If the paperwork is missing, say so before the day — we would rather move you onto novice or semi-experienced than fail a refresher you were never eligible for.
The instructor will watch daily checks, travel, stacking and pedestrian awareness. Habits from years on the same site (one-handed travel, poor observation at aisle ends) are the usual corrections. That is the point of a refresher: competence now, not nostalgia for a course in 2016.
Employers should update the authorisation matrix the same week. A new certificate in a drawer with an old authorisation list is how audits fail. Pair the day with HSE L117 records and, if the operator also supervises, IOSH Managing Safely.
Weekend refreshers fill quickly around shift patterns. Call 0121 213 1174 if you need Saturday or Sunday at the Birmingham centre, or an on-site day for three operators on your own counterbalance, reach, Flexi or PPT.
A refresher is a competence check, not a reunion. If you have changed employer, expect the new site to want familiarisation even after you pass. If you have changed truck type, book conversion. If you cannot find the old certificate, bring whatever records you have and we will say honestly whether a refresher is allowed.
Operators who only use PPT still need the day if the last assessment is outside the 3–5 year window. Pallet trucks injure people when daily checks and pedestrian rules slip. Mention PPT when you book so we are not assessing you on a counterbalance you no longer drive.
If three colleagues share a truck type, book together. The 3:1:1 day is designed for that. Mixed truck types in one refresher only work when each person already holds that category and we can rotate machines — say so up front. Do not surprise the instructor with a VNA request on a counterbalance-only day.

Forklift refresher course FAQs
Industry practice is every three to five years, or sooner after an incident, a long break from the truck, or a change of equipment. HSE does not set a single legal expiry date on the certificate.
Refreshers are for operators who already hold relevant certification. We commonly assess counterbalance, reach truck, Flexi/Bendi and LLOP/PPT. Tell us the categories on your existing certificate.
Documented evidence of previous formal training on the truck type. If you cannot evidence prior certification, novice or semi-experienced training is the correct route instead.
